SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Attackman Dylan Yonts had three points to lead Saint Leo to a 7-5 win over Shorter University Friday, March 6 at University Turf Stadium.
Yonts tallied a game high three goals on 13 shots. Jason Randolph, Jake Gilmour, Matt Weller and Eric Gendron each added a goal, while Gilmour added an asisst.
In addition to Yonts' big night, the Lions received another great effort from Will Cothron at the faceoff X. Cothron won 11-of-16 (.688) draws, including all six first-half faceoff.
Shorter was the first to score, but the Lions rattled off four straight goals to gain a lead they would never relinquish. In the second quarter, Shorter's Andrew King scored an unassisted goal to cut the Lions' momentum in the second quarter. The Hawks cut the Lions lead to three, but Yonts scored his first goal of the game with 6:50 left iin the second quarter. The junior connected with freshman Jake Gimore to keep the Hawks at bay.
Shorter closed the game to one in the third quarter, and held the Lions scoreless despite Saint Leo's 11 shots. In the fourth quarter, Yonts connected with Chad Marino moments after the faceoff and extended the Lions lead back to three with 5:46 left in the game. The Hawks scored once more, but the Lions held on for a two-point victory.
Goalie Dave Moore a Lions defense that held Shorter to a season low five goals. Moore played the entire 60 minutes and made 11 saves.
Saint Leo owned a 39-24 advantage in shots for the game.
The Green and Gold will return to University Turf Stadium Sunday, March 8 when they host No. 13 Mercy. Faceoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
