Three-run uprising in the fourth leads Lions past Rollins, 5-3

Box Score

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- The 12th-ranked Saint Leo baseball team completed a three-game Sunshine State Conference series sweep at Rollins College with a 5-3 victory over the Tars, Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.

The win was Saint Leo's seventh straight SSC victory, and improved the Lions' record to 27-6 overall, 8-4 in the SSC.

Saint Leo broke open a 1-1 game with three runs on four singles in the top of the fourth, taking a lead it held the rest of the way.

Troy Sieber got aboard with a lead-off base hit, and Cole Stancil moved Sieber to second with his one-out single into right field. Jordan Taylor singled to left field, plating Sieber with the go-ahead run.

Taylor Perez reached on an error by the Rollins third baseman, loading up the bases for Bobby Twitty. Twitty laced a base hit through the right side, scoring both Taylor and Stancil to give the Lions a 4-1 lead.

Rollins rallied for one run in the bottom of the fourth. Carlos Garmendia got aboard with a one-out double to right, and eventually crossed on Nick Breen's single to center field.

Twitty drove in Saint Leo's lone run of the sixth inning, hitting a triple into right center to score Taylor. Taylor reached with a single to right to start the inning.

The Tars tacked on a single run in the seventh to cut the margin to 5-3, with Alex Miller getting aboard on a base hit to left and scoring on Mike Dolan's double down the left field line.

Saint Leo prevented Rollins from getting a runner past second over the final two innings to seal the win.

Twitty finished the day 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Sieber was 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI. Taylor went 2-for-3 on the day, crossing twice and driving in one run. Saint Leo batters combined for 11 hits, most for the Lions over their last five outings.

Breen was the only Tar with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 versus the Lions with one RBI.

Saint Leo starter Jordan Pendleton improved to 5-0 with the victory, fanning three Tars while allowing all three Rollins runs and scattering six hits over seven-and-a-third innings of work.

Brandon Mumaw came on in relief with one out in the bottom of the eighth, and recorded three strikeouts over one-and-two-thirds to pick up his second save of the season.

Rollins starter Brian Auerbach was touched for 10 hits and three earned runs over his seven-and-a-third innings on the mound, and fell to 2-1 with the loss.

Saint Leo has a short week before its next SSC series, with Lynn University visiting Southard Stadium on April 2 and 3. Lynn is ranked No. 20 in last week's Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II poll. The series opens on Thursday, April 2, with a single game starting at 6:00 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Friday, April 3, with a 1:00 p.m. start.
