Box Score 2 WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Junior Michael Dunnigan and senior Liam O'Sullivan each picked up their seventh wins of the season as No. 12 Saint Leo baseball won both games of a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader against Rollins College, on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Stadium. The Lions claimed a 5-1 victory in game one, and completed the twinbill sweep with a 2-1 win over the Tars in game two.
Saint Leo improved to 26-6 overall, 7-4 in the SSC, while Rollins fell to 15-17, 2-9 SSC. The Lions will go for the series sweep in the concluding game on Sunday, March 29, at noon at Alfond Stadium.
The five run effort in game one was led by sophomore Troy Sieber, who went 2-for-2 with a walk, a double, and a home run, tallying two Saint Leo RBI. Sieber hit a solo shot in the top of the second inning, tying the game at 1-1 after Rollins plated a run in the bottom of the first to briefly take the lead. Later in the inning, junior Cole Stancil would come around to score on a wild pitch.
In the top of the fourth a pair of doubles by Sieber and right fielder Bobby Twitty led to another Saint Leo run. Sieber's sac fly to right field plated senior Nick Perez in the top of the fifth, extending the Lions' lead to 4-1.
The final Saint Leo run came on a walk issued to freshman Chase Turner in the top of the ninth with the bases already loaded, forcing Dale Irving across the plate.
Dunnigan (7-1) scattered six hits and allowed one run over 3.2 innings pitched, while striking out one Tar batter. Senior reliever Tyrone Miller came on in the fourth and allowed just three hits and three strikeouts over 5.1 innings to shut down the Tars for the remainder of the game.
Rollins starter Matt Tulley dropped to 3-5 on the season after pitching a full 7.0 innings, giving up as many hits and four of the Lions' five runs.
Game two of the twin bill turned into a pitchers duel between O'Sullivan and Rollins' Seth Brenner.
O'Sullivan (7-2) threw a five-hit effort for his second complete game of the season, allowing a single Tar run in his seventh win. The South Grafton, Mass., native struck out eight on the day, including back-to-back strikeouts with the Tars' Chris Corbett on third to get the Lions out of a jam in the Rollins half of the eighth inning.
Brenner scattered seven hits over 6.1 innings on the hill for Rollins, surrendering two runs while registering two strikeouts. Matt Hendricks came on for the Tars in the seventh for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Saint Leo plated both its runs in the second inning. Taylor Perez got aboard with a one-out fielder's choice grounder to short, and promptly stole second. Freshman Lane Stancil drove in Perez with a base hit through the left side for the first Lion run, scoring later in the frame on a wild pitch.
Rollins got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Carlos Garmendia, but the Tars were able to get a runner past second base just once over the remaining five innings.
