Lions run past Adams State, 16-6

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Saint Leo posted its second win in as many games Tuesday night at University Turf Stadium. The Lions downed Adams State 16-6 in their final non conference game of 2015.

The Lions held the Grizzlies scoreless in the third quarter and led 11-4 after 45 minutes of action en route to a 10 goal triumph. Saint Leo scored five goals in the fourth quarter, tying the teams best fourth period score of the season.

Chad Marino led Saint Leo with a season-high seven points on two goals and five assists. Marino missed the single game assist record by one helper, a mark of six assists set in 2006 and reached again in 2009. Dylan Yonts and Jake Gilmour each scored four goals in the win. Yonts notched his sixth hat trick of the season, while Gilmour's four markers were a career high for the freshman. Gilmour also added an assist, for season best five points. Kevin Hutchinson and Matt Weller each added a pair of goals.

Saint Leo turned on the pressure in the opening quarter, outshooting the Grizzlies 11-10 and winning four of seven faceoffs. Gilmour and Yonts netted consecutive goals to give Saint Leo a 3-1 advantage. Weller scored in the final 16 seconds of the period for a 4-3 Saint Leo advantage.

The Lions lead swelled to 7-4 in the second quarter, but most of the action came in the third. The Lions bagged four consecutive goals and extended the Saint Leo lead to 11-4.

Adams State snagged a goal in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but Bruce Preeschl snapped any hopes of a comeback with his first career goal.

Saint Leo outscored the Grizzlies 5-5-2 in the first quarter including a man-up goal by Yonts to end the game.

Danny Mayes had three goals for Adams State and the Grizzlies' Chris Bucciarelli turned in 15 saves.

Saint Leo goalie Dave Moore turned in his third consecutive 10+ save performance, his seventh of the season.

Jake Kavanagh took the Faceoff X for the Lions and went 15-of-25 (.600) and collected four ground balls.

Saint Leo returns to University Turf Stadium Saturday at 1:00 for a Sunshine State Conference match-up against no. 9 Tampa.
