Baseball upended at Southard by Embry-Riddle, 11-1

SAINT LEO, Fla. - The 12th-ranked Saint Leo baseball team moves to 24-6 on the season after falling to future conference foe, Embry-Riddle, by an 11-1 score on Tuesday night at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.

The Lions' lone run came on designated hitter Nick Boland's home run in the ninth inning. The sophomore from Cranston, R.I., sent a two-out 1-0 pitch onto the turf at University Turf Stadium beyond the right field fence off Embry-Riddle reliever Clayton Wagner.

Embry-Riddle (22-12) posted three runs in the second inning, with two runs scoring on Kyle Zirbes' one-out single.  The Eagles extended their lead to 9-0 with a six-run fourth inning, keyed by Liam Goodall's grand slam home run.

Saint Leo freshman Robbie Cook made his first career start on the mound for the Lions and took the loss. Six different Lion pitchers saw action versus Embry-Riddle, allowing 10 earned runs on 15 hits with six strikeouts.

Embry-Riddle starter Zac Grotz improved to 6-1 on the year with the win. Grotz scattered two hits over 6.0 innings of work while striking out three and delivering two walks.

Saint Leo looks ahead to a three-game Sunshine State Conference series on the road at Rollins beginning this Friday, March 27, at 6:00 p.m.  The series will continue and conclude on Saturday, March 28, with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
