Box Score WINGATE, N.C. -- The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team outscored host Wingate by an 8-0 margin in the second and third quarters to rally from a 2-1 deficit and defeat the Bulldogs 13-4 Saturday at Irwin Belk Stadium.
Dylan Yonts, Matt Weller, Jay Calcagno, and Jake Gilmour combined for eight points in the victory. Gilmour tied his career high three goals and Calcagno scored two goals and added an assist to finish with three points. Yonts and Weller each contributed two goals.
Jake Kavanagh won 14-of-18 (.737) faceoffs to propell the Lions to a 39-31 shot advantage.
The Bulldogs were the first to score, and tallied two of the game's first three goals.
Weller scored the Lions first goal in the 1st quarter, but Calcagno sparked Saint Leo's scoring spree in the second quarter thanks to a man-up goal, assisted by Bruce Preeschl. Over the next 36 minutes, Saint Leo scored 11 goals, including three man-up goals.
In the second quarter Josh Kaufling, Chad Marino and Yonts scored, but Gilmour overpowered Wingate's defense in the third quarter. The freshman scored all three of his goals in the third. Preeschl and Connolly each had assists. Yonts connected with Jason Randolph for the Lions four-goal third quarter.
Saint Leo scored three goals in the fourth quarter before Wingate closed the game to 12-3 in the final five minutes of the contest. The deficit was too large to overcome and Nick Argitis put an exclamation point on the game, scoring in the last 30 seconds of the game.
Lions goalie Dave Moore totaled 16 saves to earn the win, including 10 saves in the second half.
The Green and Gold went 17-for-20 in clear attempts and collected 41 ground balls to the Bulldogs 29.
Saint Leo returns to action Tuesday, March 24 when it hosts Adams State for the last nonconference game of 2015. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
