PENSACOLA, Fla. – Continuing its busy spring break slate, the No. 3 Saint Leo women's tennis team fell to No. 7 University of West Florida by a 5-4 final score at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex, Wednesday evening.
The setback pushes the Lions record to 10-3 overall while the hosting Argonauts improve to 9-2 on the season.
UWF emerged from doubles play with a 2-1 advantage, as No. 10 tandem Monika Kochanova and Laure-Eline Faure defeated Anastasia Wagner and Pauline Helgesson in the top flight by an 8-1 final score. UWF duo Nina Bubelova and Fernanda Amaral bested Maria Benkirane and Coralie Pesenti by an 8-2 set.
The Lions lone doubles victory came on the third court, as Isabella Robbiani and Gabrielle Paul teamed up to defeat Kat Dikosavljevic and Francesca Fanchin by an 8-4 tally.
The Green and Gold made a comeback in singles play, as Marine Beugre-Guyot and Helgesson each won their singles bout. Beugre-Guyot defeated Dikosavljevic in straight-sets while Helgesson mirrored with a 6-4 and 6-2 win over Sarai Flores.
The Argos took the top flights as Faure trumped Robbiani 6-0 and 6-4 before No. 4 Kochanova outdueled Wagner in a pair of close 7-5 and 7-6 sets. Paula Montoya defeated Amaral in three sets, winning by a 3-6, 6-3 and 6-4 match to knot the score at an even 4-4.
The deciding court came down to a three-set showdown between Benkirane and Bubelova, as the latter edged Benkirane by set scores of 7-5, 4-6 and 6-3 to end play.
The Lions will conclude its spring road series with another top-25 matchup, battling No. 18 Midwestern State University at 10:30 a.m. (EST) on Thursday, March 19.
