Box Score MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team trailed Pfeiffer 6-3 at halftime, but outscored the Falcons in the second half 6-5. It wasn't enough for a comeback in Misenheimer, N.C. as Pfeiffer held on for an 11-9 win at NE Lefko Field.
Matt Weller, Eric Gendron and Dylan Yonts each scored two goals and added one assist in the Lions effort. Jay Calcagno added 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) while Kevin Hutchinson and Jake Gilmour each added one goal each.
Pfeiffer never trailed in the contest but lost to the Lions in face offs, shots and ground balls. The Lions won 13-of 23 face offs, led by Jake Kavanagh at the X with 11 wins. Saint Leo outshot the Falcons 40-38 and picked up 31 ground balls to Pfeiffer's 22.
The Falcons defense prevented the Lions from converting on six extra man opportunities. Saint Leo went 1-for-6 in man-up situations.
In the first two periods, Pfeiffer answered every Saint Leo goal, and took a 6-3 advantage at the half. It wasn't until 8:41 in the third that Calcagno and Gendron connected for back-to-back goals and sparked a 4-0 run into the fourth quarter. The Lions only trailed by one, for the first time since the first quarter.
The score was 8-7, but Pfeiffer yet again answered with two unanswered goals of their own and regained a three-goal lead. Yonts and Weller scored two more times, but it wasn't enough and Saint Leo dropped an 11-9 decision.
Dave Moore made nine saves in 60 minutes between the pipes. Pfeiffer's Joe Capstaff and Michaeal Moorehead combined for 13 saves, six and seven respectively.
The Lions continue their two-game road swing on Saturday at Wingate. The opening face off is slated for 1:00 pm.
