SAINT LEO, Fla. – Facing the top-ranked junior college team in the country, the Saint Leo women's tennis team bested ASA College by an 8-1 final score on Saturday afternoon at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.
The Lions improve to 9-2 on the season while the visiting Avengers are tabbed with their first loss and conclude the day with a 3-1 tally.
The Lions took a 2-1 advantage after singles play as Anastasia Wagner and Pauline Helgesson bested Megane Bianco and Macarena Olivares by a 9-7 score. Reigning Sunshine State Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week Isabella Robbiani teamed with Gabrielle Paul to defeat Simone Pratt and Daniela Vanko by an 8-3 set.
Avenger's tandem Mingxiu Du and Tyler Smith outdueled Maria Benkirane and Paula Montoya for their lone set win of the contest as Saint Leo took a 2-1 lead into singles play.
The Lions completed the sweep in singles, as Robbiani battled Olivares to a three-set win. Wagner bested No. 6 Megane Bianco in straight-sets (6-2 and 6-3) as the remaining four Saint Leo athletes swept their ASA College counterparts.
Marine Beugre-Guyot trumped No. 32 Mingxiu Du by 6-1 and 6-2 sets as Helgesson ousted No. 24 Vanko in similar straight-set fashion. Montoya upset her ranked foe as Pratt garnered ITA's No. 14 junior college ranking.
The Green and Gold will meet Georgia College on Monday, March 16th on the campus of the University of West Florida for a 1 p.m. start.
