WINTER PARK, Fla. – On shortened rest, the No. 8 Saint Leo University men's tennis team outdueled No. 13 Rollins College on Thursday afternoon at the Martin Tennis Complex.
The Lions improve to 9-3 on the season with a 3-1 mark in Sunshine State Conference play while the hosting Tars fall to 7-5 with a 1-2 tally in SSC matchups.
The Green and Gold earned a clean sweep in doubles action as Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti trumped No. 19 tandem Anton Bettink and Adrian Di Felice by an 8-6 set. Egor Panyushkin and Netanel Alcabas followed suit, besting Jacobo Herrero and Patrick Sell in 8-4 fashion. Guillaume Vanelven and Fons Verberne took the final set of doubles play, defeating Henning Ander and Malte Christesen by a 9-7 score.
The Lions rode their momentum in the singles round as Vanelven ousted Di Felice by 6-3 and 6-1 sets before Theiler clinched the match by sweeping Sell by 6-1 and 6-3 set scores. Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio won the sixth flight to round out the scoring for Saint Leo, sealing the victory by besting Mike Santa Lucia by a pair of 6-2, 6-2 sets.
The Lions will welcome the top-ranked junior college program in ASA College on Saturday at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex. The match is set for a 12 p.m. start on March 14.
