Lions pounce early and often and roll over Lees-McRae

Box Score

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team ousted visiting Lees-McRae Thursday night thanks to a dominating team effort. 10 different Lions scored in the 17-8 effort, led by junior Dylan Yonts with seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) and freshman Jake Gilmour with six (1 goal, five assists).

The first 16 seconds of the Lions sixth game of the season set the tone for Thursday's nonconference game. In the blink of an eye, Jake Kavanagh won the opening face-off and raced down the field and scored the first goal seven seconds into the game. Nine seconds later, Yonts connected with Jake Gilmore for the duo's first one-two punch of the night. Yonts scored twice in the first quarter, and freshman Jay Calcagno added two goals, while Gilmour tallied two assists, and Hutchinson also dished out two.

The Lions stretched their lead to 9-0 through two quarters and over 22 minutes of action before the Bobcats jumped on the scoreboard. Lees-McRae scored twice in the final two minutes of the second quarter and Saint Leo held a 9-2 advantage at the half.

The pattern continued in the third quarter, but after Yonts scored his fifth and final goal, the LaGuardia twins took over the third quarter. Tony LaGuardia followed a Chad Marino goal halfway through the period, and gave the Lions a nine point cushion. Less than one minute later, Tony LaGuardia set up his brother Mike LaGuardia for a goal and the pair stretched the lead to double-digits. Mike LaGuardia returned the favor and within seven minutes, the Brunswick, Ohio natives produced four goals and two assists.

Saint Leo entered the fourth quarter with a ten point lead, and head coach Brad Jorgensen shuffled in his entire running roster, allowing 39 Lions to see action in the teams fourth victory of the season.

Mike and Tony LaGuardia each finished with two goals and one assist, while Jay Calcagno totaled two goals. Kavanagh scored once and added eight ground balls. Anthony Visintin tallied two points (1 goal, 1 assist) while Marino, Preston Pena, and Zach Lysyk each netted one goal.

Dave Moore and Jessee Leeman split time between the posts. Moore notched his fourth win for the Lions and made two saves on four shots faced in 30 minutes of action. Leeman made three saves against 9 shots faced.

The Lions dominated the face-off and won 24 of the games 28 faceoffs. Kavanagh went 16-18 (.889) at the X, Mark Lang went 5-6 (.833) and Conner Knaresboro went 3-4 (.750).

The Lions return to action Satruday at 1:00 pm at University Turf Stadium. Saint Leo will host Florida Tech for the squads 2015 Sunshine State Conference opener.
