SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 3 Saint Leo women's tennis team dropped its top-5 matchup against No. 2 Armstrong State by a 9-0 score on Saturday. After the loss, the Lions are knotted 1-1 on the season while the hosting Pirates start their 2015 campaign with a win.
Armstrong State completed the clean sweep after winning all three doubles matchups and taking the single events to earn their first win of the season.
The Green and Gold found itself in a 0-3 hole at the conclusion of doubles play. Lions tandem Maria Benkirane and Anastasia Wagner fell 8-2 to Clara Perez and Lena Lutzeier as the Armstrong duo of Diana Stomlega and Alejandra Cisneros outdueled Pauline Helgesson and Gabrielle Paul by an 8-1 score. Rounding out doubles play, Marine Beugre-Guyot and Isabella Robbiani fell 8-3 at the hands of Carolina Prats-Millan and Nicole Fossa Huergo.
In singles action, the Lions fell in straight-sets in five of the six matchups, leaving Beugre-Guyot the lone Saint Leo player to force a tie-breaker, ultimately falling 0-6, 6-3 (5-10) to Stomlega.
The Green and Gold begin Sunshine State Conference play with a Feb. 14 matchup against Florida Southern College. The Saturday contest is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at the Warden Tennis Center on the FSC campus.
