The Saint Leo men's tennis team faced Coastal Georgia in the first match-up of the 2015 season. The Lions came away with an 8-1 road victory in Conway, S.C. The win marks the third consecutive season the Green and Gold have opened the season with a win.
The Lions came out swinging in doubles play, as the top tandem of Alex Theiler and Bruno Sisti downed Rhan Burton and Erick Bermudez 8-3. The no. two pair of Fons Verberne and Guillaume Vanelven took down Robin Lucas and Daniel Rush 8-4.
Singles play proved to be quick and painless as the Lions swept all six matches. Vanelven blanked his opponent winning the four singles, while Egor Panyushkin fell in line with a pair of 6-1 defeats over Burton in the two singles. In the closest match of the day, Verberne stole a 7-5 and 6-2 victory while Theiler downed Bermudez in the no. one singles match. Jacobo Gonzalez-Tarrio defeated Mateo Garcia 6-3, 6-2 while Bruno Sisti buried Joel Huner 6-1 and 6-2.
Saint Leo continues its weekend road trip Saturday at Armstrong State. The match is slated for 10:00 am.
