Melbourne, Fla. -- The Saint Leo University women's basketball team suffered an 87-71 road loss at the hands of Florida Tech Wednesday night. Chachi Guzman and Mary Redmond combined for 34 points in the Lions effort.
Florida Tech (18-2, 8-2 SSC) never trailed in 40 minutes of action, and jumped to an early 18-8 lead. Saint Leo (7-13, 2-8 SSC) came back within six inside the 10-minute mark, but Florida Tech rallied on a 6-0 run in two minutes to take a 30-18 lead, its largest of the contest.
Saint Leo's best half came in the second. Down 42-34, the Lions got hot from behind the arc, shooting 60%. The Green and Gold went 6-10 from three-point range, and went on a tear to pull within four. Redmond got the ball rolling with a three at the 14:45 mark, and in the next three scoring possessions, Guzman, Maggie Flynn and Guzman again each poured in shots from deep. With just under 12 minutes to play, Saint Leo trailed 53-50.
Despite the brief momentum swing, Florida Tech outlasted the Lions and prevailed in the final minutes of the game.
Guzman scored 17 points, and went 3-for-6 from behind the arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Guzman grabbed three rebounds, dished out a game high six assists and tallied three steals. Redmond's 17-point effort marks the sixth time the freshman has scored double-digits this season. Redmond went 4-for-8 from the three-point mark and added six rebounds and three assists. Flynn and Kinnara Lewis chipped in 14 and 12 points respectively.
The Green and Gold return to the friendly confines of the Marion Bowman Athletics Center for a 2:00 pm match-up against Rollins.
