Lions stave off No. 5 Lynn

SAINT LEO, Fla. – In a top-5 Sunday showdown, the No. 3 Saint Leo women's tennis team ousted No. 5 Lynn University, 6-3 at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex.  The victory marks the first regular-season win over the Fighting Knights since 2013, as the Green and Gold have beaten Lynn in postseason play in 2014.

Isabella Robbiani came up with a huge win over ITA Divison II National No. 1 Valentine Confalonieri by a 6-2, 1-0 (retire) score to give the Fighting Knights junior her first loss since her freshman year of play.

The Lions improve to 3-1 on the season with a 2-0 mark in Sunshine State Conference play while the visiting Fighting Knights conclude with their first loss, ending 4-1 with a 0-1 SSC tally.

The Green and Gold took a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of double play, as tandem Robbiani and Maria Benkirane defeated Lynn duo Grace Mpassy and Rosalie Willig by an 8-2 score.  Anastasia Wagner and Pauline Helgesson teamed-up to beat Martina Glendacheva and Alina Jane by an 8-5 margin.  Lynn twosome Confalonieri and Carolina Cuevas took the No. 2 flight by an 8-2 score over Gabrielle Paul and Marine Beugre-Guyot.

Robbiani ousted Confalonieri to begin the singles round while simultaneous wins from Beugre-Guyot and Benkirane clinched the Saint Leo victory.  Benkirane outdueled Mpassy 4-6, 6-1 and 6-1 while Beugre-Guyot avenged her doubles loss to Cuevas by taking their singles matchup in straight-sets (6-2 and 6-3 scores).  Helgesson earned the final win over Jane to conclude the match.

The Lions will hit the road to play Palm Beach Atlantic University on Friday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m.
