BOCA RATON, Fla. – Doling out a 30-point barrage, junior Chachi Guzman led the Saint Leo University women's basketball team to a 67-62 victory over Lynn University, Saturday afternoon at the de Hoernle Athletics and Cultural Center.
The Lions improve to 8-15 with a 3-10 tally in Sunshine State Conference play while the hosting Fighting Knights fall to 7-15, 1-12 in SSC contests.
Guzman dominated the battle, scoring 30 points and dishing out 10 assists for a double-double. The guard posted four steals and four rebounds while shooting 11-for-19 from the field.
Senior Melissa Jackson spun her ninth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points while grabbing 10 boards.
Saint Leo coasted to a 32-22 score at the half as Guzman netted 12 points and caused four Lynn turnovers. Jackson ended the first stanza shooting 60% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.
Lynn fought back in the second half, scoring 40 points to trim the Saint Leo lead. Sharneka Mccatty shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe, notching 12 points for the Fighting Knights. Guzman would make sure the Lions held on to the lead however, scoring 18 points in the second half on route to a double-double performance.
Zachara Bailey led Lynn in scoring, reaching 14 points while Mccatty posted all 12 of her points in the second half. The duo was unable to match Saint Leo's offense, as the Lions ended with a 67-62 win.
The Green and Gold will return home to host the University of Tampa on Wednesday, Feb. 18 for a 5:30 p.m. start. Live stats as well as a live video webcast will be available through www.saintleolions.com.
