Lions wrap up weekend with doubleheader split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MONTEVALLO, Ala.- Saint Leo University went 1-1 on the day to close out the 2015 Montevallo Classic, defeating host institution University of Montevallo 10-7, but falling to Lindenwood University 15-6.  The Lions are now 9-1 to start the season as they suffered their first loss of the season tonight.

The Falcons of Montevallo struck first, something the Lions have not been accustomed to this season.  With two outs in the bottom of the first, first baseman Steven Knudson put a solo shot over the fence to give Montevallo a 1-0 lead. He finished 2-5 on the day.

The lead wouldn't last long as Saint Leo came roaring back in the top of the second putting up four runs behind a Bobby Twitty three run home run and an errant throw allowing Dale Irving to score. For Twitty, it was his fifth long ball of the season.  Irving had doubled to get on base, his only hit of the game.

The Lions would add another run in the top of the third inning after a series of walks. Montevallo attempted a comeback in the bottom of the third putting up three runs on a two run home run and a fielder's choice RBI.  The effort would not be enough however as Saint Leo continued to control the game.

Despite giving up five earned runs on the night, pitcher Michael Dunnigan picked up his fourth win of the season. He went 6.2 innings surrendering 11 hits, one walk, and registering two strikeouts.  In his previous outing, Dunnigan had appeared late in the game to shut down Florida Southern and ended up getting the win.  Brandon Mumaw pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.

The Lions also faced Lindenwood University as part of doubleheader due to potential inclement weather.

True to the season thus far, the Lions put up runs early as they went into the fourth with a 6-4 lead. But those six runs scored in the firs three innings would prove to be their final tallies of the game while Lindenwood would go on to notch 11 more runs.

Cole Stancil and Troy Sieber each went 1-3 with their lone hits being home runs. The home runs counted as each one's fifth of the season, keeping pace with Bobby Twitty who hit his fifth earlier in the night. Saint Leo as a team have hit 25 deep ones already in this young season.

Lindenwood's attack was led by Nathan Prindle, Wes Degener, and Drew Quinones. The trio combined for 10 hits, six runs, and 6 RBI.

Saint Leo ends the Alabama portion of its road trip with a 2-1 record and a 3-1 road trip record overall. They return home Tuesday night for a single game matchup against Southeastern University.
