Lions' Irving homers in tenth for big baseball road win

Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla.- In a thrilling 10-inning outing, Saint Leo baseball defeated the No. 16 Florida Southern Moccasins 10-9 at Henley Field in a Tuesday night regional matchup.  The Lions improved to 7-0 on the season while the Mocs dropped to 3-3.

The scoring was started by Saint Leo in the top of the second inning with a Bobby Twitty solo homerun, his fourth of the season. Then in the top of the third, with bases loaded, Troy Sieber blasted his fourth homerun, first grand slam, of the season to make the score 5-0. That improved his RBI total to a team leading 14.

The Mocs weren't ready to fold it in. First basemen Blake Swann took a Jordan Taylor pitch and put it over the fence for a two run homer. Joey Miller and Kyle Richards each contributed RBI hits to notch the score at 5-5 at the end of the third inning.

Saint Leo bats remained hot in the top of the fourth as Nicks, Boland, and Perez led the charge. Boland, the Lions' designated hitter, took a ball deep for a two-run homerun. Later in the inning, Tampa-native Perez singled to score catcher Dale Irving. In the fifth it was Boland who struck again for the Lions doubling to right field to score Bobby Twitty.

After being able to escape bases-loaded jams in the previous two innings, the Saint Leo defense surrendered a run in the sixth on a throwing error. The Mocs were able to get two runs back in the seventh inning and one more to tie the game at nine apiece in the bottom of the eighth.

A scoreless ninth inning for both squads led to extra baseball for the fans. However, Saint Leo wasted no time getting on the board as catcher Dale Irving led off the tenth inning with a solo home run to break the tie.  Pitcher Michael Dunnigan, who entered the game in the bottom of the eighth after Florida Southern had tied the score, sealed the game with two-and-a-third scoreless innings to earn his third win of the season.

The Lions will have the next couple of days off before travelling to the University of Montevallo for the 2015 Montevallo Baseball Classic. They will face Albany State on Friday at noon, the University of Montevallo on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., and Lindenwood University on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
