Lions down Lynn to earn first SSC win

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team earned its first Sunshine State Conference win on Saturday afternoon, taking down host Lynn University in a tight conference battle. The Lions used the offense of two 20-point performances from Chachi Guzman and Chelsy Springs.

1Q | Saint Leo used a hot-shooting performance from Guzman to jump out to an early lead. Guzman went 4-4 from the floor, two of which were from deep. She finished with 10 points in the period. The Lions also forced three turnovers. | SLU 14-10 |

2Q | The Lions maintained a solid offensive production, shooting 53.8-percent from the field. However, Saint Leo committed seven fouls, while Lynn did not committed a single one. Lynn also out-rebounded the Lions, 8-6. Saint Leo managed to maintain the lead through the half. | SLU 32-27 |

3Q | Lynn used the third quarter to close the gap, getting the game to just a two-point gap, 36-34, and then taking their first lead since the beginning of the game, at 41-40. However, it did not last long as Chelsy Springs added a lay-up to her scoring total to give the Lions the lead back. Saint Leo only hit six of their 16 shots, but they out-rebounded the Fighting Knights, 9-7.  | SLU 45-41 |

4Q | Again the Fighting Knights brought the score within two points, but Megan Leslie and Springs helped the Lions regain a four-point lead. Springs scored five-straight points, but Lynn countered with six-straight bringing it to 56-54. Saint Leo hit clutch free throws down the stretch, and sealed the game. | SLU 64-60 |

Points to Note
This was Springs fourth 20+ point game of the season as she added 22 points on 10-14 shooting. It was also her fourth double-double as she grabbed 12 rebounds.
Guzman recorded her third 20 point game of the season, shooting 50-percent for the game. She also dished out six assists.
Leslie recorded a career-high six points.
Saint Leo shot 50-percent from the field as a team, and grabbed 28 rebounds.

For the Fighting Knights
Lynn had four players score in the double-figures, led by Zachara Bailey and Charla Nelson-James, who each chipped in 16 points. Tifani Kerrison added 11 points off the bench, and Bria Huffman added 10.
The Fighting Knights only committed 14 turnovers, while forcing the Lions into 17.  The Fighting Knights also out-rebounded Saint Leo, 30-28.

Saint Leo has the week off for finals, and then will host Barry on Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. Barry is 5-3, 1-1 in SSC Play.
