Lions downed by #10 Rollins on the road, 70-47

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Saint Leo senior Melissa Jackson paced the Lions with 12 points in a 70-47 setback at No. 10 Rollins College, Saturday afternoon at Warden Arena.

Jackson went 4-of-12 from the floor and hauled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Lions, who fell to 5-8, 0-4 Sunshine State Conference, with the loss.

10th-ranked Rollins (11-1, 3-0 Sunshine State Conference) was paced by Sarah Taylor's 15 points, with Emmalee Schill chipping in 11 points. Ashley Losch grabbed eight boards for the Tars to go with her nine points. The Tars received 29 points off the bench, led by Emily Raymer's eight.

Saint Leo was held to a 3-of-27 mark from the floor (.111 FG%) in the first half while Rollins shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30), allowing the Tars to grab an early lead in a game in which they never trailed and were tied only once.

The Lions trailed by as many as 36 in the second half, before ending the game with a 13-0 run lasting the final 3:42 of the game to cut the final margin to 23 points. Sophomore Gabby Ortiz tallied all seven of her season-high seven points during the run, including a steal and layup-plus-one to cap the game's scoring.

Defensively, Saint Leo held Rollins to 36.7 percent (11-of-30) shooting in the second half.

Rollins' took charge of the game early in the first half with a 16-1 run lasting over five minutes on the game clock. Saint Leo finally brought the Tars' run to a halt on Aaliyah Ramirez's free-throw with 10:16 left in the opening frame, by which time Rollins at a 20-6 lead.

The Tars continued to extend their lead throughout the remainder of the first half, with the margin reaching the 20-point range on Jasmine Stone's three-pointer at the 7:50 mark to give Rollins a 30-9 lead.

Saint Leo's defense clamped down on Rollins late in the first half, holding the Tars scoreless for nearly five minutes while going on a 5-0 run to cut the lead under 20, 36-18, with 1:58 to play. However the Lions committed four of their nine first-half turnovers during that stretch, and the Tars eventually snapped out of their slump with a pair of buckets in the final minute – giving Rollins a 40-18 lead at the break.
