Boateng goal lifts Lions over Tritons in regional play
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (September 24, 2014) - The sixth-ranked Saint Leo men's soccer team got back to its winning ways on Wednesday evening, defeating Eckerd College by a score of 2-1 in south region action at the Turley Athletic Complex. The win advances the Lions to a record of 3-0-2 on the season, while the Tritons drop to a mark of 2-4 on the year.
Maxamilian Schulze-Geisthovel got the ball rolling in the 19th'minute with a goal off of an assist by Bafou Sanogo placing put the Lions ahead, 1-0. Despite the Lions' early success, all teams remained reasonably quite on the sidelines, which allowed both teams to close out the half with a score of 1-0 with 45 minutes left to play.
A Saint Leo foul with 51:02 on the clock in the second half gave Eckerd the go-ahead point as Nick Jackson converted a penalty kick to knot the score at 1-1. However, the Lions answered right back with a goal by Agyei Boateng off of an assist by Velasquez with 52:04 on the clock to give the Lions the go-ahead point to seal the deal.
In cage for Saint Leo, Manuel Schoenhuber yielded one shot on frame, while his counterpart, Alex Gott, gave up two goals while making six saves.
Saint Leo led the overall shot count 12-5, as well as shots on goal, 8-1. The Lions held the upper hand in corner kicks, 3-0, and trailed the Tritons in fouls, 14-13.
