No. 9 Saint Leo set for two key South Region contests

Lions to face No. 21 West Alabama and West Florida

SAINT LEO, Fla. (September 18, 2014) – After climbing to No. 9 on the NSCAA Division II Men's Soccer National Poll this past week, the Saint Leo men's soccer team is prepped and ready for two key South Region contests this weekend.  The Lions will square up against No. 21 West Alabama on Friday evening at 7 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon showdown against West Florida at 1 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.

  • Saint Leo enters into Friday evening's Top-25 matchup with a 1-0-1 overall record.  The Lions opened their 2014 campaign with a 2-0 win over then-No. 2 Carson-Newman back on September 6 before reaching a 0-0 draw against Clayton State in a neutral site game played at the University of Tampa on September 13.
  • Saint Leo checks in at No. 9 on the latest NSCAA DII Men's Soccer poll.  The highest ever national ranking the Lions have received was No. 2 on the NSCAA poll back on November 8, 2005.
  • Junior keeper Mauel Schoenhuber has opened his 2014 regular season slate with two consecutive shutouts.  The Traunstein, Germany native has earned eight saves so far this season.
  • The University of West Alabama Tigers enter into Friday night's contest with a 3-1 record.  The Tigers opened the season with a 6-2 thrashing over Concordia back on September 4, and followed up with two 4-0 victories over Montevallo and Florida Tech.  Last game out, West Alabama dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 10 Young Harris on September 14.
  • West Florida takes to the road for the first time this season, playing at Tampa on Friday, followed by the matinee on Sunday at University Field.  The Argos are currently 1-2 on the season, and dropped out of the Top-25 poll this past week from their previous No. 18 ranking.
