GREENWOOD, S.C. – Sophomore forward Arielle Kabangu's goal in the 73rd minute left Saint Leo University women's soccer short of host Lander University's scoring tally in the first half alone, and the Lions dropped a 3-1 decision to the Bearcasts on Sunday at Lander's Jeff May Complex.
Kabangu finished her unassisted score on a shot directly in front of the Lander goal, not long after an attempt by freshman Lindsay Perkins was blocked. The goal was Kabangu's sixth of the season.
Lander (2-0-1) put up three goals in the first half, led by Logan Lewis' marker in the 14th minute off a pass from Kimberley Kesler. Kesley scored what would prove to be the game winner in the 22nd minute, and Casy Black gave the Bearcats a 3-0 lead with her goal in the 26th minute.
Lander outshot Saint Leo, 13-6, but the Lions had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Abby Evans played the opening half in goal for the Lions, recording two saves against three goals allowed. Laura Carstens came on in the second half and charted three saves over her 45 minutes in goal.
Lander keeper Katie Lyle finished the day with one save.
Saint Leo (3-1-0) will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17, when it hosts No. 9 Rollins College at 7:00 p.m. at University Soccer Field.
