Saint Leo Unable to Topple Tenth-Ranked Lindenwood, 16-7

Lions Square Off Against Third Nationally-Ranked Opponent of the Season

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team was unable to take down the 10th-ranked Lindenwood University Lions on Sunday afternoon, falling to their south regional opponent by a final score of 16-7 at University Turf Stadium.  The loss drops Saint Leo to a mark of 8-5, while Lindenwood advances to a record of 11-2 on the season.

The Green and Gold was led in scoring by Christina Minneci, who tallied two goals on the afternoon while earning a game best five draw controls.  Kristen McGovern, Joanna Chadwick, Bethanny Jolly, Allie Sheftall, and Kelsey Burns netted one goal apiece, while Alix Murray and Jolly earned one assist each.  Chadwick led the team with four ground balls.

In goal for Saint Leo, Brittany Millsap earned seven saves while allowing eight goals in 30 minutes of action.  Kaylyn Kearns made four saves while yielding seven goals in 25 minutes of play, while Nicole Sirota-Plotnikov allowed one goal in the final minutes of play.

Lindenwood was led by Melissa Smith, who posted a game high four goals.  Jordyn Constance matched Smith in points, tallying three goals and an assist on the day, while Erin Abbott scored three goals of her own.

Christine Hehmeyer earned the win in cage for Lindenwood, making eight saves while allowing just five shots on 13 shots faced in 55 minutes of action.

Squaring off against their third nationally-ranked opponent of the season, the Saint Leo women's lacrosse team took on the challenge with tenacity.  Christina Minneci opened up the scoring on the afternoon with an unassisted goal two minutes into the contest to give Saint Leo a 1-0 lead.

Lindenwood responded with three quick goals of its own to pull ahead 3-1 with 25:51 on the clock, but Chadwick broke the run by converting a free position attempt 37 seconds later to set the score at 3-2.

Both teams traded blows before Lindenwood closed out the half with four straight to enter into the break with an 8-3 lead.

Lindenwood continued to ride its momentum throughout the second half, outscoring Saint Leo 8-4 to conclude the game with a nine goal lead.

The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team returns to action on Thursday, April 10, when they host fifth-ranked Florida Southern at University Turf Stadium.  Game time against the Moccasins is slated for 7 p.m.  Fans who cannot make it to the game will be able to catch all of the action live on the Saint Leo Sports Network at SaintLeoLions.com.
