Lions Drop Pair to Rollins in SSC Doubleheader

Winter Park, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team dropped both games of its Sunshine State Conference (SSC) doubleheader, on Sunday afternoon, to Rollins College; 2-0 in game one and 8-4 in game two. The Lions are now 23-15 on the season and 5-6 in SSC play.

In game one, Cassie Boggs and Michelle George both led Saint Leo going 2-for-3, combining for four of the Lions' five hits in the contest.  Brittany Ewing had the other hit going 1-for-3.

The Tars 27-10 (10-5 SSC) were the first on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning after getting four hits and scoring two runs; the only two runs of the game.

Saint Leo looked to break through in the top of the seventh; however Rollins kept the Lions scoreless.

Sarah Steiner (11-6) tossed 5.1 innings, allowing two runs off of four hits, and recording four strikeouts.

In game two, the Lions came to life in the top of the sixth inning after the Tars got on the scoreboard first.

George paced Saint Leo once again going 2-for-3, and McKenzie Burns was 2-for-4. Angela Kafalas went 1-for-3 and logged her first home run of the season. Rachael Heath was also 1-for-3 with a triple.

Rollins would pick-up two runs in the first inning, one in the second, one in the fifth, and four in sixth, off of a total of 11 hits.

Saint Leo was held to just one hit and no runs going into the top of the sixth inning. George led off the frame with a single to leftfield and then Burns singled to shortstop. Adriana Sanders would then load the bases on a fielder's choice to the pitcher. Ewing eventually drove in Sanders with a single to leftfield to make the score 4-1.

The Lions looked to come back in the seventh inning on Kafalas' homerun, followed by Heath's triple to rightfield. Burns then drove in Heath with a single cutting the Tars' lead to 8-4. Saint Leo, however, would not be able to get any closer.

Ashley Ehlers (9-4) was saddled with the loss, going 1.1 innings and allowing three runs off of four hits.  Alana Tabel went 4.0 innings allowing five runs off of seven hits.

The Lion will return to the field on Friday, April 4 when it takes on Eckerd College, in Saint Petersburg, at 7 p.m. for the first game of a three-game SSC series. Games two and three will take place on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
