Burns Nets Hat Trick as Lions Fall to No. 1 LIU Post, 19-6

Lions Score Second Most Points against Top-Ranked Post This Season

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Freshman Kelsey Burns netted a hat trick, but the No. 1 LIU Post Pioneers proved to be too much for the Saint Leo women's lacrosse team on Thursday afternoon at University Turf Stadium, handing the Lions a 19-6 loss.  The loss drops the Lions to a mark of 5-2, while the top-ranked Pioneers stay perfect on the season and advance to 5-0.

The Lions' six goals are the second most a team has scored against the Pioneers so far this season.

Joanna Chadwick, Allie Sheftall, and Bethanny Jolly each scored once behind Burns' hat trick, while Christina Minneci earned an assist.

Brittany Millsap started the game between the pipes for Saint Leo, allowing eight goals and earning one save before freshman Kaylyn Kearns stepped into cage.  Kearns made seven saves on the afternoon while allowing 11 goals in 50 minutes of play.

Their counterparts for LIU Post, Katie Hannan, Renee Schwartz, and Kasey Kephart, combined to make five saves while allowing six goals.

The Pioneers were led in scoring by Jackie Sileo, who notched an impressive five goals and five assists for 10 points on the afternoon.  Katie Rotan, Cara Douglas, and Stefani Vagelatos each scored three, while a total of eight players scored for LIU Post.

LIU Post opened up the game running out to a nine goal advantage before Chadwick was able to place the ball between the pipes on a free position shot with 18:03 to go before the half.  The Pioneers outscored the Lions 5-2 to close out the first half with a 14-3 lead, and carried their momentum through the second half to outscore Saint Leo 5-3 en route to their fifth straight win.

The Saint Leo women's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, March 19, when they take on Belmont Abbey in Belmont, N.C.  Game time against the Crusaders is set for 1 p.m.
