Lions Sweep The Panthers Scoring 15 Runs in Doubleheader

SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Saint Leo softball team collected a pair of wins as they swept the Adelphi Panthers by scores of 5-3 and 10-2 (5 innings), respectively, Wednesday evening at University Softball Stadium.

The Lions (17-11) totaled 10 hits in game one and 14 hits in the nightcap.

Cassie Boggs highlighted the contest for the Lions going a combined 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with a two run homer, coming in game one.  Adriana Sanders also went 4-for-6 on the evening collecting 2 RBI and a pair of stolen bases.

The visiting Panthers (2-5) jumped out, in game one, to an early lead in the first inning scoring two runs off a double by Katie Andrews.  The Lions answered back in the bottom of the second with a home run from Boggs over the left field fence.

Saint Leo would rally in the fifth as Sara Steiner crushed a three-run homer over the center field wall giving the Lions their first lead of the night. That would prove to be all they needed to finish off the Panthers.

Steiner would improve her record to 9-4 on the season allowing only one hit in 4.0 innings and striking out one.  Ashley Ehlers, who started the game for Saint Leo before being relieved by Steiner, worked 3.0 innings, however received a no decision.

In game two, the Lions came to life collecting nine hits, and batting though the order, to score eight runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Sanders, Brittany Ewing, Boggs, Tiffany Thompson, Rachael Heath, and McKenzie Burns all produced singles in the inning.  Steiner doubled and Michelle George tripled to add to the hit total. Saint Leo's seven RBI and three stolen bases in the first inning proved to be all it needed to put the game out of reach.

The Panthers would pick-up one run in the fourth and fifth innings, and would not be able to cross the plate in the final frame.

The Lions forced the mercy rule by scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning when Torrie Weindorf singled to the right side of the infield allowing Burns to score from second base.  Ewing also had a single allowing Weindorf to cross the plate scoring the final run of the game.

Alana Tabel (5-3), starting just her seventh game of the season at pitcher, recorded her first complete game of the year, allowing only three hits and one walk, while striking out nine of the 21 batters she faced.

The Lions will be back in action on March 14th at 7 p.m. at University Softball Stadium where they will face off against Nova Southeastern.
