No. 8 Lions Take Down No. 29 St. Mary's, 7-2

Saint Leo Sweeps Doubles En Route to Eighth Victory

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis team swept doubles play and carried the momentum to a 7-2 victory over No. 29 St. Mary's (Texas) on Wednesday afternoon at the Saint Leo Tennis Center.  The win advances the Lions to a mark of 8-3 on the season, while St. Mary's drops to a record of 6-4.

The doubles duo of Aloua Adjenak and Fon Verberne defeated Michael Maciel and Phillipp Raickovic, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles to open the afternoon on a high note.  Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier then defeated Jared Fellows and Bob Resink, 8-5, at the No. 2 slot, followed by Oskar Nurmio and Jacobo Gonazalez-Tarrio earning a 9-7 win over Matt Banner and Brien Galon at No. 3 doubles.

Singles play kicked off with St. Mary's fighting back as Raickovic defeated Nurmio 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 slot to set the overally tally at 3-1 in favor of the Lions.

Adjenak helped give Saint Leo more of a cushion, closing out the No. 1 position with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Maciel at No. 1 singles, followed by Gonzalez-Tarrio with a win at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4, over Resink.

With the Lions holding onto a 5-1 lead, Nicholson-Lewis extended the advantage to five, defeating Fellows 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, at the No. 3 slot.

Verberne made quick work of his opponent at No. 5 singles, defeating Richard Foley 6-1, 6-2, before St. Mary's wrapped up shop with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles as Galon defeated Sam El Nehmani.

The Saint Leo men's tennis team returns to action on Thursday, March 13, when they host Southern Indiana.  Match time is set for 3 p.m.
