Lions Falter at Montevallo, Lose First Contest of 2014

Box Score

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After beginning the 2014 season with a perfect 5-0 record, the Saint Leo baseball team collected their first loss at the hands of the Montevallo Falcons, Saturday afternoon from Johnson Field in Alabama.

Unlike the Lions' previous five games, it was the Falcons who scored first, stringing together four singles in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the Lions came out in the top of the third to score one, thanks to an RBI single from junior Bobby Twitty. Montevallo answered back, however, in the bottom of the third, with a homerun over the leftfield fence to bring the score to 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons tacked on three more runs after taking advantage of a single and five Saint Leo walks.

With the Lions unable to wake up their bats, Montevallo scored two more in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, Saint Leo scored one run after Taylor Perez and Alex Mata connected on back-to-back singles. Despite the effort, the additional run would not be enough, and Montevallo finished the 9-inning game with an 8-2 win.

The Falcons held Saint Leo to just six hits on the afternoon, and junior captain Bobby Twitty was the only Lion to collect two.

The pitching staff, comprised of Kevin Games, Tyrone Miller, Michael Dunnigan, Brett Nizamoff, and Ethan Lichtenberg, allowed just nine hits, striking out seven. In addition, the Lions' defense forced Montevallo to leave 13 runners left on base.

The Lions will round out the series against Montevallo tomorrow at 1:00pm.
