SAINT LEO, Fla. – The eighth-ranked Saint Leo men's tennis doubles duo of Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victory Lozier defeated the Barry tandem of Leo Vivas and Romain Costamanga, 8-6, but the Lions eventually fell to the No. 1 Buccaneers by a final tally of 8-1 at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops Saint Leo to 3-2 on the season, while Barry Stays perfect and advances to 6-0.
In doubles play, the duo of Ismail Lemtouni and Bruno Sisti dropped the first decision of the day, falling to Kevin Sielmann and Renato Lombardi, 8-5 at No. 3 doubles. The top slot fell next as Ahmed Triki and Ollie Lemaitre defeated Aloua Adjenak and Fons Verberne, 8-6, before Nicholson-Lewis and Lozier could wrap up the No. 2 slot with an 8-6 victory.
With Barry holding onto a 2-1 lead entering into singles competition, the Lions gave the Bucs a run for their money. Sisti picked up the win at No. 1 singles, defeating Sisti 7-5, 6-2 to give Barry the 3-1 advantage, while Vivas concluded at No. 4 singles defeating No. 50 Lemtouni, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0.
The No. 5 slot closed out next, with Lemaitre defeating Lozier 7-6(4), 6-2, followed by Lombardi taking down Gonzalez-Tarrio at the No. 6 position, 7-5, 6-3.
The third slot wrapped up next, with Adjenak earning the first set over Dreer, 7-5, before Dreer took the final two sets 6-4, 10-6. Costamanga and Nicholson-Lewis battled it out to the end, but Costamanga came out on top, 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
The Saint Leo men's tennis team returns to action on Monday, February 24, when they host Armstrong Atlantic at the Saint Leo Tennis Complex, match time is slated for 10:00 a.m.
