SAINT LEO, Fla. – Four members of the Saint Leo women's soccer team were tabbed for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Division II All-South Region team, which was announced Tuesday.
Sophomore forward Arielle Kabangu was a First Team selection while redshirt freshman Katie Waddell and sophomore Saffron Jordan earned spots on the Second Team. Sophomore Selena Jaimes was named a Third Team honoree.
Kabangu finished the 2014 campaign as the Lions' top scorer, netting 17 goals and seven assists for 41 points. Three of her goals this season were game-winners, and she recorded a hat trick on September 6 against Carson-Newman while leading Saint Leo to a 6-0 victory. She currently ranks seventh among Division II leaders in scoring, and ninth in total points. Kabangu's eight goals in Sunshine State Conference games was tied for the top spot among SSC statistical leaders.
Kabangu is a repeat selection to the NSCAA All-Region team. She was an NSCAA First Team All-Region selection in 2013 as a freshman, on her way to earning 2013 Division II All-America honors.
Waddell, Jordan, and Jaimes are all first-time All-Region selections.
Waddell was second on the team in scoring at season's end with 13 goals and eight assists for the Lions, on her way to Second Team All-SSC honors. She recorded two-goal performances on three occasions, including Saint Leo's 5-1 victory over Lynn University. Waddell charted three game-winning goals in 2014 – among them the only goal scored in the Lions' 1-0 triumph over 22nd-ranked North Alabama in the First Round of the NCAA tournament, a win that was Saint Leo's first victory in six tries in NCAA post-season competition.
Waddell ranked sixth in the SSC in total points, tied for fifth in total goals, and tied for sixth in total assists.
Jordan received a slot on the All-Region team after charting three goals and six assists for 12 points in her sophomore season. The versatile midfielder was one of only four players on the roster to play in all 20 games for Saint Leo in 2014, and she recorded game-winning goals against Nova Southeastern and Palm Beach Atlantic during the regular season.
Jaimes received All-Region honors after anchoring Saint Leo's back line throughout much of the 2014 season. The sophomore defender recorded her only point with an assist on Waddell's game winner against North Alabama in the NCAA tournament on a free kick from 50 yards out.
Saint Leo finished the season with a 14-6-0 overall record, 6-2-0 in the Sunshine State Conference, and reached the semifinals of the SSC Women's Soccer Championship. The Lions earned a berth in the NCAA tournament, defeating North Alabama and ninth-ranked Barry before falling to eighth-ranked Rollins in the third round.
