Rampf earns individual title as three Lions earn All-Championship Team honors
BRANDON, Fla. (November 8, 2014) – It was history in the making Saturday morning at the Sydney Dover Trails as both the Saint Leo men's and women's cross country teams earned their first ever Sunshine State Conference Championship titles.
The women's team saw their historical morning unfold in dramatic fashion as the Lions edged the University of Tampa by one point to take home the championship title. Tampa, who has won the last seven Sunshine State Conference Championships, saw their streak come to an end as the Lions bested the Spartans, 36 to 37.
Colett Rampf led the way, earning the individual title as she crossed the line in 22:20.20. Rampf beat her opponent, Chantell Blundell from Tampa, down the final stretch in an all-out sprint, and earning a time good for fourth overall in program records for 6K events.
Jelena Tancic and Kari Grippo were close behind, coming in third and fourth, respectively with times of 22:45.40, and 22:45.90. All three top-10 finishers earned All-Championship Team honors.
Kylie Fagan finished 13th overall with a time of 23:30.40, followed closely by Anet Milian in 15th with a time of 24:36.60. Natalie McCormick rounded out the group of Lions who finished in the top-20, crossing the line in 24:49.60, good for 19th.
Tiffany Gargiulo took home 21st with a time of 24:56.00, followed by Caroline Condon who completed the course in 25:28.80 and took home 28th to finish in the top half of the field.
Lauren Csubak (26:10.50) and Haley Roussell (26:35.10) finished 42nd and 45th, respectively, while Jessica LaVancher and Grace Lederer finished back-to-back with times of 26:44.60 and 26:47.00.
Shelby Adams crossed the line in 27:29.00, followed by Allison Knipe (28:18.30), Marina Carcaba (28:41.00), and Alexis Clayton (29:04.20).
Saint Leo pulled in 36 points on the day and edged the University of Tampa by one point as the Spartans finished in second with 37. Nova Southeastern finished in third with 75 points, followed by Florida Southern in fourth with 136. Florida Tech and Lynn were in a close battle for fifth and sixth, with Florida Tech coming out on top with 145 points, while Lynn brought in 149. Rollins rounded out the group with 171 points on the day.
The Saint Leo women's cross country team returns to action on Saturday, November 22, when they travel to Huntsville, Alabama to participate in the NCAA Division II South Region Championships.
