MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Saint Leo University volleyball team dropped a Sunshine State Conference road contest against Barry University, Friday evening. The Lions drop to 18-11 with a 7-6 mark in SSC matchups while the Buccaneers improve to 17-9, 7-6 in conference.
Saint Leo was led defensively by Jillian Stolzenburg, as the middle blocker totaled six blocks. Senior Yaidimar Santiago increased her season dig tally by 16 on the loss as the Lions were unable to build an offensive tempo. Senior Lauren Campbell posted nine kills but it was not enough to take the crucial conference game.
The Green and Gold jumped to a 9-4 lead in the first set after trading blows with Barry. The Buccaneers would pull to a 13-13 to change the pace of the game and take a 25-22 win over the Lions. The set saw 10 tie scores before concluding the frame in favor of BU.
Barry did not surrender a lead in the second frame, winning by a score of 25-21 to push Saint Leo into a 0-2 hole. The Lions were able to tie the set at 8-8 but Barry rolled to victory behind the efforts of Jayla Trombley and Tashalyn Begon.
The back-and-forth third stanza saw 14 tie scores and 10 lead changes but ultimately ended in favor of the Buccaneers by a close 26-24 score.
Saint Leo will conclude its road series with a 4 p.m. contest against Nova Southeastern University, Saturday. The match will be played in the NSU Arena on the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. campus of the Sharks.
