WINTERPARK, Fla.- It wasn't a lack of trying that ended the Saint Leo women's soccer season after a 1-0 loss to Rollins College in the third round of the NCAA Soccer Championship. The Lions played a solid 89 minutes 42 seconds, battling against a Tars squad that has been a thorn in the side of Saint Leo all season.

Rollins, in front of a packed home crowd, came out firing with a quick ball in behind the Saint Leo defense, leading to a shot past keeper Laura Carstens from Brenna McKee, just 18 seconds into the contest.  For the next 10 minutes the green and gold seemed to be in a daze.

Genevieve Gignac had a nice ball in past the defense and a shot on goal to kick off the Lions offensive.  Multiple times in the first half Saint Leo created opportunities to equalize, but could not find the back of the net.  It was as if a force field blocked the net, but it can be credited to Mary Spring and the Tars defense.  Up front for the Lions, Arielle Kabangu and Katie Waddell worked hard to challenge the Rollins back four. 

In the second half both teams turned up the intensity.  Selena Jaimes received a yellow card for her efforts as did Breanna McKee. Much to Saint Leo's credit, they kept Rollins on edge desperately seeking that security goal.  The defense of Krisitin Nerman, Jaimes, Ari Foreman, and Victoria Covas prevented any further scoring. Keeper Laura Carstens finished with seven saves in 90 minutes. The Tars doubled up Saint Leo on shots 22-11.

The Lions finish their season with a very respectable 15-6 record.  Rollins will face Columbus State at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday for the regional championship.
