SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 14 Florida Southern College, Wednesday evening in the Marion Bowman Activities Center. After the loss, the Lions dip to 18-13 with a 7-8 mark in Sunshine State Conference contests while the visiting Mocs improve to 23-5, 13-2 in SSC play.
The Green and Gold turned to a pair of seniors to lead the offense as Alexa Griffith-Hardy and Tawni Warren pummeled the Mocs for 16 and 12 kills, respectively. Freshman Britt Sederholm reached double-digits with a 10-kill outing while setter Rachel Olliff spun a double-double effort with 25 assists and 11 digs to tune both the offense and defense.
Senior Yaidimar Santiago led the Lions with 21 digs to round out the defensive showing.
FSC middle hitter Kayshia Brady swatted 14 kills while setter Ali Skayhan flirted with a triple-double, posting 41 assists, 17 digs and eight kills. Libero Catherine Brusie led both squads with 24 digs.
Saint Leo took the first contest 25-19 as outside hitter Sederholm blasted a barrage of six kills in nine swings. Griffith-Hardy and Warren posted three and two kills, respectively. Santiago anchored the back row with nine digs as the Lions stifled FSC to begin play.
Junior Brady rebounded with a six-kill second set as the Mocs took a 25-18 second frame to even the match 1-1.
Florida Southern built momentum into the third stanza as Brady hit an errorless 4-for-4, while also blocking three swings. Senior Warren nearly matched with a 5-for-6 showing as the set ultimately went to the Mocs 25-19.
FSC took the final set by a 25-20 score behind the efforts of Kate Stromberg. The senior grounded five kills to take the match 3-1.
The Lions will conclude the regular season at home, with a 7 p.m. contest against Rollins College on Saturday, Nov. 15th. Saint Leo will honor the efforts of its seniors with a pregame ceremony.
