SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Saint Leo women's soccer scored twice in the second half to stun previously undefeated and 12th-ranked University of Tampa, 2-0, in a Sunshine State Conference matchup Wednesday night at University Soccer Field.
Saint Leo improved to 6-2-0 overall with the victory, 2-0-0 in the SSC, and picked up the all-important three points in the conference standings.
Redshirt freshman Katie Waddell notched the game winner in the 67th minute when she got control of a rebound that got loose from Tampa keeper at the edge of the 18-yard box. Waddell tapped the shot into a then-wide open goal-mouth for the unassisted score.
Sophomore Arielle Kabangu extended the Lions' lead to 2-0 in the 82nd minute with an insurance goal, driving a shot into the upper corner from 20-yards out.
Saint Leo keeper Laura Carstens charted a pair of saves while recording her first shutout of the season and the seventh of her career. Tampa's Caroline Frykgard logged three saves in the Spartans' goal.
The Lions outshot the Spartans by a 12-7 margin, but Tampa had a 4-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Tampa was also called offside six times to Saint Leo's two.
The Saint Leo victory snapped a four-game winless streak against Tampa going back to the 2011 season. The Lions are now 4-16 all-time versus the Spartans, however Wednesday night's win was the first Saint Leo women's soccer victory over Tampa on the Lions' home field.
