Lions Charge Past Eckerd on Senior Day

SAINT LEO, Fla. – After a win last night that gave coach John Conway his 300th win, the Lions softball program (34-14, 14-4 SSC) collected another two wins against the visiting Eckerd Tritons, Saturday afternoon from University Stadium. In the two senior day wins, the Lions also broke Saint Leo's all time single season steals record.

It was an offensively eventful day for the Saint Leo softball team, as the Lions plated a total of 15 runs, while allowing the Eckerd Tritons to score just five.

The first game of the Sunshine State Conference doubleheader featured a nine hit game by the Lions. While the Tritons collected seven hits, RBI singles and doubles by the Lions' Chelsey Steedley, Sarah Steiner, and Torrie Weindorf propelled Saint Leo to a 6-5 win over Eckerd.

Much unlike the first game of the afternoon, the Lions' second game featured an outstanding 9-0 run-rule after just four and one half innings of work. Nearly every Saint Leo hitter collected a hit in the effort, with senior Rachelle Gremo smashing a double and junior Sarah Steiner sending a two-run homerun over the centerfield fence.

On the afternoon, the Lions' offense collected 20 hits, five stolen bases, and nine walks. The five stolen bases improved Saint Leo's single season total to 134, knocking out the previous record of 131.

As a Saint Leo defense, each pitcher received time on the mound. Senior Megan Still (5.2 IP) got the start for the Lions in the first game, before Sarah Steiner (0.1), Ashley Ehlers (0.1) and Alana Tabel (0.2) all made relief appearances. Ehlers took home the win in the effort, with Tabel collecting her third save of the season. In the second contest of the afternoon, Steiner took the mound, tossing 4 innings before Tabel came in for the top of the fifth. As a pitching staff, the Lions struck out four batters on the day, walking five and allowing 10 Eckerd hits.

Saint Leo will return to action on Friday, Apr. 19 when they travel to Boca Raton to take on the Lynn University Fighting Knights. The SSC contest is set to begin at 1 p.m.
