Lions Hold Tight Leash on Bulldogs in 13-7 Deep South Win

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team won their seventh-straight game as they defeated Wingate University 13-7 on Saturday afternoon at University Turf Stadium.  The Deep South Conference victory advances the Lions' record to 7-2, and 5-1 in DSC action, while the Bulldogs drop to 2-10, and 1-5 in conference play.

Saint Leo takes hold of the top spot in the DSC thanks to a four goal performance from Chris Caiazza, and hat tricks from Matt Obermeyer and Robert HutchinsonRyan Burke tallied a goal and two assists for three points on the afternoon, while Tom Horn and Matt Weller scored a goal apiece.  Kevin Hutchinson dished out two assists, while Tom Horn and Chad Marino earned one assist each.

George Proechel tallied an assist on the afternoon, which put in in a tie on the program's career assist board, matching former Lion Kyle Marceau with 53.

Wingate was led by Chase Clifton with three goals on the afternoon.  Behind Clifton, Derek Watts, Ryan Vogrig, Taylor Womble, and Garrett Kendall each scored once, with Watts leading the team with three asissts, and Vogrig earning an assist of his own.

It was a slow first quarter for both teams, with the score tied at 1-1 leading into the second stanza.  Saint Leo used the second period to their advantage, going on a seven goal run while holding the Bulldogs silent to hold onto an eight goal lead at the half.

Wingate outscored the Lions 4-1 in the third period, cutting the deficit to four with a score of 9-5.  The Lions swung the momentum their way in the final quarter, however, scoring four goals to Wingate's two for a final score of 13-7.

Dave Moore made 10 saves on the afternoon for the Lions after facing 30 shots and just 17 shots on goal.  The Bulldogs opened with Patrick Cooney between the pipes, who made five saves and allowed seven goals as he saw a total of 24:30 on field.  Travis Price closed out the game for the Bulldogs, making six saves while allowing six shots into the back of the net. 

The Lions led the shot count, 41-30, and won the ground ball battle, 27-22.  Saint Leo was 15-for-23 at the faceoff-x, with Will Cothron pulling in 10-of-14 attempts, Robert Figueroa winning 2-of-3, and Robert Hutchinson finding success on 3-of-6 attempts.  The Lions were successful on 17-of-25 clear attempts.
