Lions Defeat Albany State for Ninth Straight Win

ALBANY, Ga. –Saint Leo (10-2) finished the four-game road trip with a 5-3 win at Albany State (1-9) on Monday evening. Matt Hewitt tossed six innings in relief to lead the Lions to their ninth consecutive win.

Ryan Brnovich led the Lions offensively with three hits and a run to go along with his three stolen bases. Chris Newcomb and Frank Rawdow both tallied two hits on the evening while Rawdow also contributed two RBI.

Albany State scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead but the Lions responded in the next half inning with two runs. Brnovich doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning and he, along with Taylor Perez, was brought home on a double from Rawdow.

Lions' starter Tyrone Miller got in some trouble in Albany State's bottom half of the third and the Rams scored two runs to tie the game at three.

In the bottom of the fifth Newcomb got the inning going on a frozen rope to the third baseman. Newcomb stole second and was advanced to third on a fly ball from Michael Revell. The next pitch, with Brnovich at the plate, Newcomb took off for home and slid in safely before the pitch reached home plate to put the game back in the Lions favor.

Hewitt relieved Miller in the bottom of the fourth and proceeded to shut down Albany State for the next six innings. Hewitt did not allow a run for the duration of the game and allowed just three hits while striking out seven.

Hewitt improved his record to 2-0 with the win and Albany State's Anthony Hart moves to 0-2 while going the whole nine innings for the Rams.

The Lions get back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Melbourne, Fla. to take on the Florida Tech Panthers.
