Lions Show Tarzans Who is King of the Jungle in 70-51 Victory

MAYAGUEZ, P.R. – The Saint Leo men's basketball team wrapped up its fourth game in five days on a high note, defeating host UPR-Mayaguez by a score of 70-51 on Tuesday evening at the Coliseo Rafael A. Mangual.  Saint Leo advances its record to 4-0, while the Tarzans drop to a record of 0-4.

The Lions saw three players tally points in double figures, with Jerrel Harris leading the way with 14.  Trey Griseck and Marcus Dewberry each chipped in 10, while Chim Kadima and Cale Girten contributed nine apiece.  Dishing out assists were Harris and Devin Crisosto with a team best three each, while Griseck dealt out two of his own.

Defensively, Saint Leo was led by Ron Foxx, who pulled in a team best nine rebounds.  Girten grabbed seven of his own, while Spenser Mitchell, Crisosto, and Girten each earned six.

The Tarzans were led by Julian Rodriguez, who tallied 11 points on the evening.  Off the glass, Gabriel Garcia earned a team best five rebounds, and chipped in nine points.

It was and forth contest in the opening minutes, but momentum swung in the Tarzans favor, allowing them to jump out to as much as a six point lead in the first 15 minutes.  However, a jumper by Harris with just over five minutes to go in the first half knotted the score at 16-16, and a layup by Harris 15 seconds later shifted the momentum in the Lions' favor.  With the energy now on their side, Saint Leo ran out to a nine point lead to close out the first half with a score of 28-19.

The Lions extended their good fortune into the second half, pulling out by as much as 22 points before ending the game with a 19 points differential.

The Lions shot 37 percent from the field, and were successful on 30 percent of their shots from long range.  From the charity stripe, Saint Leo found success on 72 percent of their throws, sinking 18-of-25, led by Harris and Crisosto who were a perfect 4-for-4 on the day.

The Lions return to action on Sunday, November 17, when they host Shorter University in their home opener.  Game time against the Hawks is slated for 2 p.m. at the Marion Bowman Activities Center.  Fans who cannot make it to the game will be able to catch all of the action live on the Saint Leo Sports Network at SaintLeoLions.com.
