SAINT LEO, Fla. – Thanks to a four-RBI effort from catcher Brittany Yates and a complete game from pitcher Megan Still, the Saint Leo softball team (14-9, 1-0 SSC) conquered the Florida Southern College Moccasins (13-3, 0-1 SSC), 5-1, in the team's Sunshine State Conference home opener, Friday evening from University Softball Stadium.

Yates' third inning, two-RBI double proved to be the difference as solid defense and steady pitching put down a feisty Mocs' bunch.  

Aside from Yates' two hits, Torrie Weindorf went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI and McKenzie Burns compiled a 1-for-3 evening with two runs scored. Ashlee Sismilich and Emily Holman also etched their names onto the scores sheet scoring one run apiece. In total, the Lions collected eight hits on the night, while each of the nine starters scored a run, reached base or drove in a fellow Lion.

The Lions struck first in the third inning as Yates sent a two-out, two-run double against the left field fence scoring Burns and Sismilich.

The two-base knock proved to be enough as the Lions countered the Mocs only run of the game in the fifth inning with a two-RBI single by Yates in the bottom of the fifth and a RBI single by Weindorf in the sixth inning to close out the Mocs.

In the circle, Still (6-5) was brilliant as she scattered four hits across seven innings while striking out three batters and not issuing a walk. It marked her sixth complete game of the season.

Saint Leo did not commit an error in the field.

The Lions will return to the field on Saturday, March 3, when they continue their Sunshine State Conference series with the Mocs in a regional doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from University Softball Stadium.
