SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No.27 Saint Leo women’s tennis team (14-8, 2-6 SSC) used a 9-0 shutout performance to oust Sunshine State Conference foe Eckerd College (6-12, 1-5 SSC), Friday evening from the Saint Leo Tennis Center in SSC action.
In an overwhelming doubles show, the Lions surrendered only five points in each of the wins, before taking all six singles matches in impressive fashion.
Senior Bethania Laan and Laura Kemkes ignited the Lions’ successful evening with a dominating 8-1 win over Emmy Laing and Stephanie Jenks at the doubles top spot.
Jeanette McDonald and Adrianna Daszkiewicz followed with a forceful 8-2 win at No.3, while Selma Hidass and Caroline Ebner bounced Christine Hammerschmidt and Sonnet Ludwig by the identical score.
On the singles side, Kemkes shutout her sixth opponent of the year with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Buelow at No. 3. Hidass, meanwhile, trailed her teammate with nearly an identical shutout total as she toppled Segal 6-1, 6-0.
Laan and McDonald followed with convincing wins at the top two positions as Laan overwhelmed Laing 6-2, 6-2 and McDonald dumped Jenks 6-0, 6-4, respectively.
Daszkiewicz took down Hammerschmidt in a shortened singles match, 8-0, while Ebner overpowered Ludwig, 8-0.
In closing their home Saint Leo careers, both Bethania Laan and Tamara Bustard were honored before the beginning of the match.
The Lions now await seeding for the Sunshine State Conference Tournament which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 13 from SanLando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
