SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No.26 Saint Leo men’s tennis team (13-8, 2-4 SSC) blanked the Eckerd College Tritons (6-12, 1-5 SSC), 9-0, Friday afternoon in Sunshine State Conference from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
Honoring a pair of seniors before the match, Pablo Chavez and Julian Jean-Pierre, the Lions, along with Chavez’s help, helped close the duos home career with a dominating shutout performance of their cross-bay rivals.
After taking all three doubles matches, the Lions used six wins on the singles side to complete the regular season sweep of the Tritons.
In doubles, Chavez, along with teammate Tom Gleeson, jumpstarted the Lions’ shutout win delivering the first point of doubles action by downing the Eckerd pair of Aaron Kleefied and Erik Thunberg, 8-2.
Aloua Adjenak and Jose Morales followed with a convincing 8-3 win at No.2, while the No.24-ranked pair of Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier upset the No.20 pair of Ben Maxwell and Hisa Sato, 8-5.
In singles, Lozier continued the Lions’ hot streak as he dumped Sato in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No.2. Chavez followed by finishing out his home singles career with an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.
Adjenak bounced Thunberg in consecutive sets 6-2, 6-3, while Nicolson-Lewis’ early match control led to a impressive 6-0, 7-6 win at the top spot over Maxwell.
Gleeson made quick work of his opponent at the No. 5 spot 6-0, 6-1 and Morales finished-off Eckerd with an 8-4 win in the six slot.
The Lions now await seeding for the Sunshine State Conference Tournament which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 13 from SanLando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
