Lions Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader to Florida Tech

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team could not carry over the momentum on Friday night’s thrilling win as the Lions dropped both ends of their Sunshine State Conference doubleheader to Florida Tech on Saturday afternoon at Thomas B. Southard Stadium.  Despite scoring 12 runs in the opener, the Lions lost 19-12 and followed up with a 7-2 loss in the nightcap.

It was a Senior Day at the park that revolved around pitching as both Florida Tech (28-16, 10-11 SSC) starters went the distance, while Saint Leo (14-28, 3-15 SSC) was forced to use six pitchers throughout the entire day.

Holding hot bats on a hot day, the Lions managed 21 hits in the first game and 10 in the second, but were still out-muscled by the visitors by a lone hit in each contest.

Picking up the wins for Florida Tech were Josh Ziemba (6-2) and Randall Thompson (8-4) while both Saint Leo starters Shaun Gough (2-8) and Marshall Stalvey (0-3) got the losses.

Ryan Powers was one of a few highlights for the Saint Leo batting order as he was 3-for-4 in the nightcap and a combined 5-for-7 with two runs scored.

The Lions will have the week off before traveling to Eckerd College and facing the Tritons in the three-game Sunshine State Conference series next weekend.  The first game of the series will get underway at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night from Eckerd’s Turley Field.
