FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Despite Brittany Yates going 2-for-3, the Saint Leo softball team (21-24, 5-10 SSC) could only collect three hits as the team as they fell in its SSC rubber game to Nova Southeastern, 2-0, Sunday afternoon from the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
Yates, a Riverview, Fla. native, collected a first inning single and a fourth inning double, but was left stranded on base each time. Outside of Yates, Amber Martyn went 1-for-3 as she posted a leadoff single in the seventh inning.
In what became a pitcher’s duel, Saint Leo saw a trio of pitchers take to the circle, including starter Megan Still. Still went three innings where she allowed two earned runs on five hits.
Kristen Kelly tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief while Jaime Walker put down the one better she faced.
Unfortunately for the Lions’ faithful, NSU assembled the only two runs of the game in the first and fourth innings. Gina Bonderenko posted a two-out RBI single in the first while Sara DeMuth’s RBI double in the fourth inning solidified the contest for the home standing Sharks.
NSU hurler Lexi Sarradet stymied Lions’ hitter for the second consecutive day as she threw a complete game, three-hit shutout to improve to 9-4.
The Lions did not commit an error, but left four runners on base in the narrow loss. It also marked the 22nd game the Lions have competed in where the final margin was within two runs (8-14).
Next, the Lions will take to the road to open a three-game series with Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Tech. Game one of the series will take place on Friday, April 15 from Nancy Bottge Field in Melbourne, Fla. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
