SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women’s tennis team (12-6, 0-4 SSC) fell by the score of 8-1 to the No.3-ranked Lynn University Fighting Knights (16-1, 4-0 SSC), Tuesday evening from the Saint Leo Tennis Center. It was the second top-five opponent for the Lions’ women in three days.
The Lions were the unfortunate victims of a 3-0 doubles sweep, but did manage to grab a point from the SSC leaders in singles action. It was the first time a Lions’ team had taken a point from the Fighting Knights since March 2, 2008.
The Lions’ No.1 duo of Bethania Laan and Laura Kemkes produced the closest match for Saint Leo as they were defeated 8-4 by the tandem of Ioana Ivan and Eleonora Iannozzi.
Jeanette McDonald and Adrianna Daszkiewicz fell 8-2 at No.3, and Selma Hidass and Caroline Ebner dropped an 8-0 match at No.2.
On the singles side, Daszkiewicz took the first set of her opponent, No.21-ranked Andrea Berkova, and eventually the match after Berkova was forced to retire, 6-4, 2-1, retired.
Also highlighting the evening was a tightly contested match-up between Laan and No.11 Magdalena Ekert at No.1 singles. However, the Fighting Knights’ top singles player edged Laan, 6-3, 6-4.
The women will hit the road for a pivotal conference showdown with the Rollins College Tars this Wednesday, March 23. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
