Petronis Earns Conference Golfer of the Week Honor

ORLANDO, Fla. - Saint Leo freshman Heather Petronis has been named Sunshine State Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for the period ending March 20 it was announced by the SSC main office and Commissioner Jay Jones on Monday afternoon.

Petronis finished first of 63 golfers at the NIU Snowbird Invitational as she carded a two-round score of 75-69--144, including a second-round 69. That score marked the first sub-70 round in program history, breaking the team's previous low-round record by two strokes.

The Northwood, NJ native’s performance helped propel the 16th-ranked Lions to a first-place finish in an 11-team field that featured nine Division I opponents.

Petronis’s new individual achievement was one of a number of new marks the Lions set in this Division I-laden tournament.  In the tournament, Petronis set new record for a 36-hole tournament score and the team’s 608 total was just two strokes shy of the team record for two-round tournaments. It is still the second best 36 hole tournament in program history behind the Lions’ 606 at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in 2010.

The Saint Leo women’s golfers are currently in North Carolina competing in the 2011 Pinehurst Challenge hosted by Wingate University.  After traveling and a practice round over the weekend, the Lions teed off round one on Monday morning.
