MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The No.44-ranked Saint Leo men’s tennis team (12-5, 1-1 SSC) saw their 11-match Division II win streak snapped at the hands of the No.2-ranked Barry University Buccaneers (10-5, 3-0 SSC) in shutout fashion, 9-0, Sunday morning from the Barry Tennis Center.
The Sunshine State Conference defeat saw the Lions contest the Buccaneers at each spot in the order, but experience eventually prevailed as Barry collected the sweep.
In a thrilling back and forth doubles contest, the No.23-ranked doubles pair of Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier were narrowly edged in a tiebreak, 9-8 (7-4).
Outside of the exciting contest at No.1, the Lions also saw a slim loss at No.2 doubles as Pablo Chavez and Tom Gleeson fell by the score of 8-6.
Meanwhile, Alou Adjenak and Jose Morales fell for the first time in four matches at No.3 doubles, 8-3.
On the singles side, Saint Leo forced the Bucs into a pair of set tiebreak’s and one super tiebreak. Lozier battled but fell in straight-sets to No.26 Max Winner 6-4, 6-1.
Both Nicholson-Lewis and Vachez battled from the No.2 and No.3 spots, but soon fell by identical 6-4, 6-3 scores. Nicholson-Lewis lost to No.11 Marco Mokrzycki and Adjenak to Vachez.
Velez squeezed past the Lions’ Chavez 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, and Costamagna used everything in his arselnal to nip Gleeson 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
After falling behind a set, Barry’s Mittag used super tiebreak, come-from-behind effort to defeat Morales 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Saint Leo will get a one day break before taking on SSC counterpart and No.4-ranked Lynn University in Sunshine State Conference action. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. from the Saint Leo Tennis Center.
