WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The No.24-ranked women’s tennis team (12-4) took down in-region opponent, the No.41-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (10-8), 8-1, Saturday afternoon from Gaines Park.
Not allowing their opponent to record more than one point for the consecutive match, the Lions collected a sweep of doubles before amassing wins in five-of-six singles contests.
On the doubles side, the powerful pair of Jeanette McDonald and Adrianna Daszkiewicz blanked Krishna Domenech and Maria Jimenez, 8-0, at No.3.
Selma Hidass and Caroline Ebner teamed to defeat Jessica Wharton and Jordan Ittersagen, 8-2 while Bethania Laan and Laura Kemkes controlled their match with Vicky Baca and Natalia Trotter, 8-5, at No.1.
Carrying the momentum of a sweep into singles, the Lions quickly solidified the match as they took out the Sailfish’s top competition.
Kemkes, who collected her fifth consecutive-sets sweep of the year, quickly downed Trotter 6-0, 6-0 at No.3.
Next, Laan wrapped-up the team victory with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Baca at the No.1 spot.
Even with the match decided, McDonald and the rest of the Lions continued to perform well. The senior engulfed Vahatalo 6-3, 6-1 and Daszkiewicz made quick work of Ittersagen, 6-1, 6-0.
Selma Hidass and posted the Lions’ final point as she slid past an aggressive Wharton, 6-5, 7-5.
On his team’s performance, Head Coach James Bryce stated, "I thought the team (women) fought extremely hard today. We played to win and I was especially happy with our doubles play. We will get some good rest tonight before we play again tomorrow morning."
The Lions record and new national ranking will be put to the test on Sunday, March 20 when they take on No.4-ranked Barry University from the Buccaneer Tennis Center in Miami Shores, Fla. First serve for the Sunshine State Conference showdown is set for 9:30 a.m.
