WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The No.44-ranked Saint Leo men’s tennis team (12-4) upended the 41st-ranked Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish (10-7), 8-1, Saturday afternoon from Gaines Park.
The upset was the Lions third consecutive victory, and 11th-straight win over a division II opponent.
Overall, Saint Leo collected a clean sweep of doubles before gathering five-of-six on the singles side.
The Lions No.3 pair of Aloua Adjenak and Jose Morales downed Jonathan Kalis and Evan Sherman for the team’s first point, 8-2.
In another impressive performance, the No.23-ranked pair of Matt Nicholson-Lewis and Victor Lozier upset the No.17-ranked tandem of Krasimir Atanasov and Luke Bolanos in convincing fashion, 8-5.
Pablo Chavez and Thomas Gleeson bookended doubles as they edged the Sailfish duo of Bastian Guenther and Alex Minicozzi, 9-8 (5).
Needing only two points in singles after the sweep of doubles, the Lions received compelling wins from Lozier and Adjenak out of the No.2 and No.3 spots. Lozier turned back Guenther 6-4, 6-1 while Adjenak bounced Bolanos 6-2, 6-1.
After a setback at No.1 singles, Saint Leo grabbed consecutive victories at four, five, and six. Chavez overwhelmed Minicozzi In straight sets 6-2, 6-1 while Gleeson, after a first set scare, controlled the remainder of the match, 7-6, 6-0.
Finally, Morales closed the contest by boasting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sahlman at No. 6.
On his team’s performance, Head Coach James Bryce stated, "I thought the team (men) fought extremely hard today. We played to win and I was especially happy with our doubles play. We will get some good rest tonight before we play again tomorrow morning."
The Lions record and new national ranking will be put to the test on Sunday, March 20 when they take on No.2-ranked Barry University from the Buccaneer Tennis Center in Miami Shores, Fla. First serve for the Sunshine State Conference showdown is set for 9:30 a.m.
